Within the Gimson range of the late 1950s, the Sport version occupies a special place. Whilst the Turismo is designed for everyday, practical use, the Sport boasts a different character, a more assertive design, superior mechanics, and a look aimed at a young Spanish generation beginning to express its aspirations on two wheels. A bold positioning for a modest regional manufacturer, yet consistent with the ambition of a brand that refused to confine itself to strictly utilitarian purposes.
Its 49cc two-stroke engine is a lively and spirited unit in its Sport configuration, refined compared to the basic versions, with a sharper character that rewards the rider seeking pleasure as much as mobility. The machine’s styling reflects this more taut, more dynamic spirit, with greater attention to the presentation details that make the difference between an ordinary machine and a desirable one.
1959 was a pivotal year for Gimson. The brand had found its stride and its customer base, and the Sport version reflected a growing confidence in its own capabilities—that of a company which now knew it could offer more than just the bare minimum. Examples of this generation are now extremely rare; Gimson’s sports production never reached the volumes of the utility versions, and time has seen almost all machines from this era disappear.
