Born out of Montesa’s desire to make the sport more accessible, the Cota 49 is a 49cc trial bike designed for young riders and beginners – a pioneering idea for its time, reflecting the Barcelona-based brand’s long-term vision. Despite its modest appearance, it embodies expertise directly inherited from the great competition Cota models, with which it shares the core of its mechanical philosophy.
1976 was a significant year for Montesa. The brand was then at the height of its international reputation, buoyed by its racing successes and the influence of its riders. The Cota 49 from this period benefited from this favourable climate, a well-crafted machine, built with care in the workshops of Barcelona.
This second-generation model features the black frame that sets it apart from its predecessors, with simple mechanics designed to make it easier for riders to learn from a young age.
Today, the small Cota models of this generation have become particularly hard to find. Less well-preserved than their larger counterparts, and often mistreated by young riders, they have largely disappeared. A 1976 model in decent condition is therefore an absolute rarity, both for the collector and for the enthusiast of Spanish trial history.
