In 1967, the Matador Mk3 marked a significant turning point in the history of the Matador range, coinciding with a golden age for Bultaco. Its lines began to become more refined, as did its finish. Technically, interesting features were introduced, such as the five-speed gearbox and the sealed chain guard, which would become a hallmark of Matadors from this model onwards. It was the first Bultaco to incorporate an electric system with a battery. Despite these luxuries, its efficiency meant it was even used in competition.
Its 250cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine was by this stage a well-known and well-mastered powerplant, whose qualities had been confirmed by two years of intensive use. In 1967, Bultaco was a rapidly expanding brand, recognised far beyond Spain’s borders, and the Matador was one of its most compelling ambassadors.
Between the original MK2 and the later versions that would see the range expand and evolve into the Gold Medal, the MK3 occupies a pivotal position: that of a fully realised machine, produced over a very short period, which naturally limits the number of surviving examples.
A rare piece, for a collector who knows the history.
