The 1967 Honda Dax 70cc is one of the most iconic and endearing creations from the Hamamatsu-based manufacturer, a truly original machine that has won over the whole world with its disarming simplicity and charm.

The Dax, officially designated ST70 in Honda’s nomenclature, was born from a radical and joyful idea: to design the most compact, lightest and most fun motorised vehicle possible, capable of squeezing through anywhere and taking its rider anywhere with a smile. The result is a machine of absolute mechanical and stylistic originality: a single-piece stamped steel backbone frame that simultaneously forms the fuel tank and the load-bearing structure; tiny 8-inch wheels; a ridiculously low seat height; and a 70cc four-stroke engine housed in a remarkably compact and cohesive package.

Its 70cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, a slightly more powerful version of the 50cc model launched at the same time, is a reliable and well-built unit, equipped with a three-speed gearbox with automatic clutch that makes the bike accessible to a wide range of riders. Its modest power is offset by its featherweight and absolute manoeuvrability; the Dax slips through anywhere, clears obstacles with disconcerting ease, and delivers riding pleasure inversely proportional to its size.

1967 was the year the Dax was born; a model from this first generation is now one of the most sought-after pieces in the entire vintage Honda range. Rare, endearing and steeped in a history that has spanned decades and continents without losing an ounce of its freshness.

A charming little monster, for a collector who knows that great legends sometimes come in the smallest of packages.
