Vilar is a Catalan manufacturer of bicycles and mopeds, based in Barcelona, which is part of a long tradition of artisanal two-wheeler manufacturing in the region. Like many of its Spanish contemporaries, Vilar has no hesitation in utilising the best components available on the European market to power its frames, a pragmatic and quality-focused approach that produces consistent and reliable machines.
The choice of the Cucciolo is telling in this respect. This small 48–50 cm³ four-stroke engine, born of the genius of Aldo Farinelli and popularised by Ducati from 1946 onwards, was then the gold standard in lightweight auxiliary engines. Its technical sophistication—a four-stroke at a time when everyone else was using two-strokes—earned it a reputation for reliability and economy that spread far and wide. Choosing it was a statement of commitment to quality.
1953 marked a period of maturity for the Cucciolo, whose early versions had been progressively refined to offer a more robust engine better suited to intensive daily use. Mounted on the simple yet well-built Vilar frame, it forms a package of remarkable coherence and authenticity.
Almost all Catalan productions from this era have disappeared, victims of the passage of time and a collectors’ market that long looked elsewhere. A 1953 Vilar Cucciolo is now a precious item.
