1984 was a bleak year for Motobécane. The company had filed for bankruptcy in 1981, a victim of the economic crisis and increasingly fierce Japanese competition, and it was under the name MBK, having been bought out by Yamaha, that it continued production. The D55 is therefore one of the first mopeds produced in this new context – a machine that still bears the name and legacy of Motobécane, but within a company undergoing a radical identity shift.
Its 49cc two-stroke engine is a tried-and-tested design, directly inherited from previous generations: reliable, simple, economical, and built to last. The D55 does not seek to revolutionise the formula that has made the Mobylette a success for thirty-five years. It faithfully carries on that tradition, at a time when continuity is a value in itself.
A 1984 model bears witness to a historic transition: the last era in which the Mobylette name still carried the intact legacy of Motobécane, before MBK definitively established itself as the identity of a new era.
