The name Polaris – the North Star, an absolute reference point for navigators – was not chosen at random. It evokes direction, course and ambition: qualities that Gimson sought to embody in this machine, designed to stand out in what was then a highly competitive Spanish market. In the Gimson range of the late 1960s, the Polaris represented the most modern and assertive offering from the Valencian manufacturer, a machine looking to the future in a Spain that was gradually opening up to the world.
Its design is decidedly in keeping with the times – more angular and dynamic than Gimson’s previous models – reflecting the stylistic influences sweeping through the European motorcycle industry at the end of the decade. The fuel tank, the seat, the mudguards – every element bears witness to a level of stylistic care superior to anything the company had previously offered. Its 49cc two-stroke engine is a refined and well-built piece of machinery, finished to a standard that justifies the Polaris’s premium positioning within the range.
1968 was a fine year for Gimson; the brand was still in full swing, buoyed by Spain’s economic growth, which was driving demand for affordable, well-presented light motorcycles. The difficult years that would weaken small regional manufacturers were still ahead, and the Polaris embodies this period of confidence and ambition.
