Just eight months after the launch of the Frontera model, Bultaco released a new version, the Gold Medal. This rushed launch was due to the fact that Bultaco found itself with a surplus of Pursang motocross bikes that had been rejected in the United States due to a delivery delay. In reality, the Frontera Gold Medal was an enduro bike, very difficult to control unless you were a talented rider. Specialist magazines assessed the bike in these terms and criticised it as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, which had the opposite effect and everyone wanted to own the bike “reserved for champions”.
Its 370cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine made it a powerful and temperamental machine, at a time when engine capacity was synonymous with serious performance. Lightweight, robust and equipped with suspension designed to handle rough terrain, it embodied the best of what the Spanish motorbike industry had to offer in those years.
Today, the Frontera Gold Medal 370 is a rare and coveted piece. It embodies a bygone era when Montesa rivalled the best European manufacturers in the world of enduro, an often-forgotten but no less glorious chapter in the Barcelona legend.
