In 1959, OSSA was on the rise. The Barcelona-based company had found its stride, its engineers were in full command of their craft, and the range was gradually taking shape around models whose reputation was beginning to extend beyond Catalonia’s borders. The Motopedal 50B benefited from this favourable climate; it was a better-built, better-tuned machine, in which the teething problems of the A version had been methodically ironed out.
Its 50cc two-stroke engine was a refined piece of engineering, more reliable and smoother-running than that of its predecessor. The pedals remained essential to meet the regulatory requirements of the time and to allow licence-free use, but the machine had gained in overall coherence. Chassis, mechanics and presentation now formed a more convincing whole, reflecting a company that had learnt from its early years of moped production.
The brand was preparing to diversify its range towards sportier and more ambitious machines; the Motopedal moped was, in a sense, the final chapter of a formative period, before the brand turned its attention decisively towards competition and off-road riding. A model from this year is therefore one of the last reminders of an OSSA that was still popular and accessible, before its transformation into the sporting giants that would make it legendary.
