The G/S, which stands for Gelände/Straße (off-road/road) in German, was born in 1980 from an idea as simple as it was bold: to combine the comfort and versatility of a grand tourer with the off-road capabilities of an enduro machine. It was a concept that no one had really dared to propose before BMW, and one that would permanently transform the global motorcycling landscape. The Munich-based manufacturer didn’t do things by halves; it entered the R80 G/S in the Paris-Dakar rally as early as 1981, and Hubert Auriol won the event that same year on the production model, brilliantly validating the concept’s relevance against specialist machines.

The 798cc flat-twin, a Boxer engine in the BMW tradition with cylinders angled on either side and air-cooled, was a powerplant whose reputation for reliability and longevity was already well-established by 1984. Four years of development in the context of the Paris-Dakar and the world’s most demanding tracks refined an already remarkable machine, featuring progressive suspension, a single-sided swingarm on the right-hand side freeing the left wheel for quick tyre changes, and a driveshaft integrated into that same swingarm.

The model on display is a unique machine, specifically prepared for endurance racing in desert conditions. The GDR single swingarm has been extended by 10 centimetres, a significant modification that substantially improves ground clearance and handling on loose terrain and in dunes. The original fork has been replaced by a unit from a more modern 1998 Gas Gas enduro, better suited to the demands of competition; the original fork is nevertheless supplied with the machine, allowing it to be restored to its original condition if desired.

The restoration is comprehensive and meticulous, featuring an oven-baked frame, a new seat, a new, fully original exhaust, and a Siebenrock GS2 speedometer – a benchmark in the world of vintage BMW customisation. A machine brought up to standard with the care and attention befitting a motorcycle of such historical significance.

A tuned, restored and ready-to-ride R80 G/S, for a collector who wants to be able to ride it as much as display it.

The G/S, Gelände/Straße (off-road/road in German), was born in 1980 from an idea as simple as it was bold: to combine the comfort and versatility of a large road bike with the off-road capabilities of an enduro bike. A concept that no one had really dared to propose before BMW, and one that would permanently transform the global motorcycle landscape. The Munich-based manufacturer does not do things by halves: it launched the R80 G/S in the Paris-Dakar rally as early as 1981, and Hubert Auriol won the event that same year on the production bike, brilliantly validating the concept’s relevance against specialist machines.

The 798 cc in-line twin-cylinder engine, a Boxer in the BMW tradition, with cylinders facing both sides and air cooling, is a powertrain whose reputation for reliability and durability was already well established by 1984. Four years of development in conjunction with the Paris-Dakar and the world’s most demanding tracks have perfected an already remarkable machine, featuring progressive suspension, a single-sided swingarm on the right-hand side that frees the left wheel for quick tyre changes, and a driveshaft integrated into that same swingarm.

The model presented here is a unique machine, specifically prepared for endurance racing in desert conditions. The GDR swingarm has been extended by 10 centimetres, a significant modification that markedly improves ground clearance and handling on soft terrain and dunes. The original fork has been replaced with a unit from a 1998 Gas Gas enduro, which is more modern and better suited to the demands of competition; however, the original fork is supplied with the bike, allowing it to be returned to its standard condition if desired.

The restoration is comprehensive and meticulous: oven-baked paintwork on the frame, a new seat, a brand-new, fully original exhaust, and a Siebenrock GS2 speedometer, a renowned benchmark in the world of vintage BMW customisation. A machine tuned with the care and attention befitting a motorcycle of such historical significance.

A tuned R80 G/S, restored and ready for a collector who wants to ride it as much as display it.
