Luong Xuan Nhi is an important figure in the history of 20th century Vietnamese art. Born in Hanoi in 1914, his impressionist landscapes and, on his return from a two-year stay in the USSR, his realistic social scenes established his reputation. Thanks to his use of a soft chromatic range, and his delicate touch, he managed to give his compositions great depth.



Colonial expansion was also accompanied by an interest in the arts of the Indochinese peninsula, which led to the creation of schools of applied arts. Luong Xuan Nhi graduated in 1937 from the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, founded in 1924, where French painters taught. Like many artists graduating from this institution, the painter operates a strange and graceful mixture between Vietnamese and Western themes and techniques.



In a style attached to the artist's Far Eastern heritage, L'atelier de Broderie provides an image of traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship, which is developing more and more with the urbanization of the space conquered by Western settlers. Intimate and imbued with a certain realism, this work gives us a sensitive look at contemporary Vietnamese life, where women occupy a central place. Luong Xuan Nhi expresses herself on a traditional medium, silk, thus giving us a moving testimony of the fusion between two civilizations.
