The work we are presenting for sale is a fine example of the perfection that Soulages sought to achieve in his black paintings. In the 1950s he began making prints with the aim of renewing his pictorial technique. The varnish on the etching's copper plate is scraped and scratched here. Soulages also used acid on the copper plate, which gives the work its perforation effects. He made etching technically innovative by transforming the process, which was no longer traditional and conventional.
