Oil on canvas, signed lower right.
281/4 x 24 in.
Roberto Matta was a Chilean Surrealist artist born in 1911. He studied architecture and worked in Le Corbusier's studio before meeting many of the 20th century's greatest artists, including Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock and Marcel Duchamp. He quickly became the leader of a movement called “Automatism”, which allowed the subconscious mind to be reflected in artistic creation.
“I start by staining the canvas. In this task I look for something that is unknown and unseen, something new for me. I work on it until it becomes even more unknown.”
