Here we have a phantasmagorical seascape before us. Dufy has painted a view that is clearly a port, but his use of colour makes it unreal and almost magical. His technique is totally recognisable and personal| he takes inspiration from the art of the avant-gardes but creates a unique style. The colours do not necessarily reflect the forms, still less reality, nor is abstraction involved here| everything creates a feeling of reverie.

Jean Dufy was born in Le Havre in 1888, the seventh of eleven children. His childhood was bathed in the music of his father, a talented amateur, and his reading of Romantic writers, particularly Baudelaire, Mallarmé and Rimbaud. In 1906, he experienced a revelation when he discovered Matisse, Derain and Picasso at an exhibition of modern art in Le Havre.
Jean Dufy was an exceptional colourist who imbibed the work of Cézanne, Braque and Picasso, mingling colours with their opposites, and making play with the material to create vibrantly unique works.
