Edouard Léon Cortès, himself the son of a painter and grandson of a craftsman, was born in 1882 in Lagny sur Marne. Following in the footsteps of his father, a well-known artist at the Spanish court, he entered the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts at 17. He exhibited at the 1902 Salon, when he was barely 20, and was much acclaimed for a Paris street scene at night.
Acknowledged by his peers and admired by collectors and art lovers, he ceaselessly continued his endeavours to capture and convey the unique ambiance of Paris. With his entirely impressionistic approach, he was chiefly interested light and the changes it brought about.
His immense talent lay in the way he imbued his paintings with an inner radiance - here, his painting is illuminated by the electric lamps reflected in the wet surroundings of a rainy city in the evening. He became a witness to the city's modernity and daily life, poetically highlighting the beauty of this ever-changing urban landscape
