Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, titled on reverse
27 3/16 x 22 5/8 in.
Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born on 4 March 1889 in Bordeaux. His talent was soon recognised, and he received numerous prizes, including the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1913, when he was only 24, and the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1920 for his Douce Illusion.
Guillaume Apollinaire wrote: “This highly talented young man is destined for a brilliant future.”
Though Domergue painted landscapes, genre scenes and flowers, he was particularly sought after for his portraits of famous figures of the time. His singular style rapidly gained a following on the international stage.
The enchanting portrait here is a fine example of this major painter's talent.
