Le Pho (1907-2001)
Oil on canvas, signed lower right
The artist, who moved to Paris shortly after attending the Indochina Fine Arts School, was sufficiently impregnated with European artistic culture for its influence to be evident in his subjects. Floral compositions thus occupy a considerable place in his paintings as a whole. He took on the still life here and made it his own, combining various materials and colours.
Each bouquet, whether made up of tulips, poppies or other flowers, is dominated by the emerald foliage. With poppies ad tulips alike, yellows and oranges stand out admirably against the cool palette of the background. Around this dominant shade, the other colours seem to be in harmonious agreement, with warm, lively colours becoming softer in contact with the blueish-whites of the vases and interiors.
While Le Pho left his pencil strokes visible when painting on silk, with these oils on canvas the only form of linearity lies in the energetic yet perfectly controlled brush strokes.
Paradoxically, these bouquets emanate a wild vitality in both formal and chromatic terms, while expressing harmony and order.
