NGUYEN NHU HOANH (NÉE EN 1914)
Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left
43 x 34 1/4 in.
Nguyen Nhu Hoanh joined the school in the middle of its development period. A year before he received his diploma, Evariste Jonchère took over as head. He aroused considerable controversy, as he wanted to introduce traditional craftmanship into the school curriculum and made no effort to conceal his anti-elitist attitude. Up until 1945, the works of Nguyen Nhu Hoanh, like those of other students, reflected a Romantic vein directly inherited from the
French 19th century. In a single painting, the work presented here combines the classicism of this teaching and aspects that evoke the surrounding
atmosphere. Emotion was supposed to be aroused in the viewer: the young painter achieves this without difficulty in this delightful picture of young boys playing marbles on the path. The two brothers in white tunics sheltering under an umbrella, the younger snuggling up to the elder, who still carries his schoolbooks under his arm, contribute to the charming lyricism of the scene.
