Back to auction

A rectangular box made of lime and oak, entirely covered in gilded and engraved leather, decorated with six scenes from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe: four on the lid and two on the front. The lid is adorned with a cartouche bearing the date 1591, whilst the front bears, on the right, the inscription: ‘PIRAMVS / TISBE’.
The sides feature two coats of arms: on the left, the arms of Monsieur, most likely those of Charles Inghelbrecht or Enghelbrecht (†1620), a member of a prominent Bruges family; on the right, within a lozenge-shaped shield, the coat of arms of Madame, presumably Clara Crocquet (d. 1627). Wrought-iron hinges, bolt lock.
Flanders, Bruges, late 16th century, dated 1591.
Height: 12 cm – Width: 31 cm – Depth: 19.5 cm
(Damage, restoration, sold as is)

On 3 July 1591, Charles Inghelbrecht married Clara Crocquet at St Walburga’s Church in Bruges; her coat of arms does not appear to have been documented to date. The coincidence of the date inscribed on the casket, the romantic subject of Pyramus and Thisbe, and the presence of the couple’s coat of arms suggests that this casket was commissioned or presented on the occasion of their marriage.
