Carved from walnut wood, he stands as if at the foot of the Cross, his right hand raised to his face, bent forward in a gesture of sorrow. With his left hand, he lifts a corner of his robe and holds the book of his emblematic Gospel. Hollow sculpture, the back filled with a piece of wood secured with old nails.
France, early 13th century.

Our rare sculpture, emblematic of 13th-century France, is comparable to the one held at the Louvre Museum [Inv. No. RF 3338]. It certainly belonged to a Calvary group created around 1220–1230 and was no doubt originally placed on a rood beam at the entrance to the choir.
