Founded in 1863 in Limoges, the Bernardaud factory quickly became a leading player in the production of Limoges porcelain, made possible by the discovery of kaolin in the region in 1768. The story began with Léonard Bernardaud, who started out as an apprentice before buying the factory where he worked in 1900 and naming it after himself. He modernised production and expanded the brand internationally, particularly into the United States.

His sons, Jacques and Michel Bernardaud, succeeded him and continued his work, despite the hardships of the 1929 crisis and the Second World War. In the 1950s, after the war, the company adopted modern techniques and maintained its international reputation, notably by producing an exceptional table service for Queen Elizabeth II’s official visit to France in April 1957, as well as for other prestigious figures such as the Prince and Princess of Liège, for whom a dedicated service was created in 1959, the year of their marriage.
