Au début des années 1930, Bugatti, grâce à son visionnaire Patron Ettore, avait déjà acquis une réputation inégalée pour ses voitures aux performances remarquables, aussi bien sur route qu'en Grand Prix. Les plus grands pilotes de l'époque accumulaient les victoires au volant des créations de l'usine de Molsheim, tout en les préférant également pour leurs déplacements quotidiens. Fort de cette série ininterrompue de succès, Ettore Bugatti restait fidèle à son moteur à simple arbre à cames, n'adoptant la technologie plus avancée du double arbre à cames en tête qu'en 1930, sur la Type 50, et uniquement sous l'insistance de son fils aîné, Jean.~ -	C'est en effet à cette période que le fils prodige marqua les créations de La Marque de son empeinte, d'abord avec l'inégalable Type 55 Roadster, une auto de Grand Prix en tenue de soirée, puis avec la Type 57. Avec son 8-cylindres à double arbres à cames en tête de 3,3 l, cette nouvelle auto offrait - enfin - à La Marque une grande routière civilisée, capable de rivaliser avec les Talbot T120 et autres Delahaye 135. Même aux 24 Heures du Mans ! Caractéristique propre à l'époque, elle était disponible avec des carrosseries usines, ou livrable en châssis au carrossier choisi par le client pour recevoir une robe sur-mesure. Le succès de la Type 57 se reflète dans ses chiffres de production : environ 680 exemplaires furent produits entre 1934 et 1940, et son châssis servit même de base à la Type 101 après-guerre.~ -	La Bugatti Type 57 #57483, équipée du moteur #360, fut livrée en châssis par l'usine de Molsheim au concessionnaire Bugatti Suisse Jean Sechaud, à Genève, le 24 décembre 1936. Le garage Sechaud la remit au premier propriétaire, le Dr. Knecht, le 14 mai 1937. Ce dernier fit carrosser sa Bugatti chez Graber, à Berne, en Cabriolet 2-portes, comme huit autres Type 57 cabriolets carrossées entre 1934 et 1937. Le design de Graber évolua au fil des années et des commandes, et on notera que #57483 bénéficie du même dessin que trois autres Bugatti qui ont toutes survécu jusqu'à ce jour. Avec leur design flamboyant - quoique sportif - les Cabriolets Graber jouissent d'une excellente réputation parmi les collectionneurs et ont souvent reçu des invitations aux Concours d'Élégance les plus importants, tels que Pebble Beach ou Villa d'Este.~ -	Après le Dr. Knecht, #57483 connut encore deux autres propriétaires suisses, messieurs Lietchi puis Baer, avant que le négociant belge, chasseur de Bugatti, Jean de Dobbeler ne s'en porte acquéreur en 1958. Il vendit l'auto aux Etats-Unis. L'auto revint en Suisse au début des années 2000, lorsque Hans Van Deventer la racheta. Il participa à son volant à une dizaine de rallyes Bugatti en Europe, avant de la céder à son actuel propriétaire, également éminent bugattiste, en 2015. ~ -	Aujourd'hui, cette exceptionnelle Bugatti 57 se présente à nous en incroyable état d'origine. C'est l'une des rares Bugatti qui est techniquement encore dans le même état qu'elle fut livrée. La voiture est matching numbers, et l'examen du véhicule laisse apparaître une voiture possédant l'intégralité de ses composants mécaniques d'origine. L'essieu avant est gravé #360, comme les carters de pont (rapport 11x46) et de boîte de vitesses. La patte arrière gauche du moteur reprend les numéros du châssis et du moteur, soit 57483-360. Le châssis est frappé #136, un numéro cohérent dans la production des châssis de Type 57. Bien entretenue, la voiture se conduit de manière merveilleusement douce et précise. Seules entorses à l'origine : un allumage électronique et un vase d'expansion. A la sortie de chez Graber, #57483 était vraisemblablement peinte en rouge foncé, une couleur que l'on retrouve à l'intérieur, au niveau des portes, et elle fut repeinte en gris argenté il y a plusieurs décennies. L'intérieur fut tt rénové il y a quelque temps. La dernière apparition publique de la voiture remonte au salon Techno Classica Essen 2018 : la voiture était alors présentée sur le stand de la marque, confirmant le haut degré d'intérêt historique de la voiture, tant par ses caractéristiques que son histoire connue et continue et son incroyable état de préservation. By the early 1930s, Bugatti, thanks to its visionary boss Ettore, had already earned an unrivalled reputation for its cars' remarkable performance, both on the road and in Grand Prix racing. The greatest drivers of the era racked up victories at the wheel of the creations from the Molsheim factory, while also preferring them for their daily commutes. Bolstered by this unbroken string of successes, Ettore Bugatti remained faithful to his single overhead camshaft engine, only adopting the more advanced double overhead camshaft technology in 1930, on the Type 50, and only at the insistence of his eldest son, Jean.~ -	It was during this period that the prodigal son left his mark on La Marque's creations, first with the incomparable Type 55 Roadster, a Grand Prix car in evening dress, then with the Type 57. With its 3.3-litre twin overhead camshaft 8-cylinder engine, this new car finally gave the marque a civilised grand tourer capable of rivalling the Talbot T120 and Delahaye 135, even at the 24 Hours of Le Mans! In keeping with the spirit of the times, it was available with factory bodywork or as a chassis to be delivered to the coachbuilder of the customer's choice for a bespoke body. The success of the Type 57 is reflected in its production figures: around 680 units were produced between 1934 and 1940, and its chassis even served as the basis for the post-war Type 101.~ -	The Bugatti Type 57 #57483, equipped with engine #360, was delivered as a chassis from the Molsheim factory to Bugatti Switzerland dealer Jean Sechaud in Geneva on 24 December 1936. The Sechaud garage delivered it to its first owner, Dr Knecht, on 14 May 1937. Dr Knecht had his Bugatti bodied by Graber in Bern as a two-door cabriolet, like eight other Type 57 cabriolets bodied between 1934 and 1937. Graber's design evolved over the years and with each order, and it is worth noting that #57483 has the same design as three other Bugattis, all of which have survived to this day. With their flamboyant yet sporty design, Graber Cabriolets enjoy an excellent reputation among collectors and have often been invited to the most important Concours d'Élégance events, such as Pebble Beach and Villa d'Este.~ -	After Dr Knecht, #57483 had two more Swiss owners, Messrs Lietchi and then Baer, before Belgian dealer and Bugatti collector Jean de Dobbeler purchased it in 1958. He sold the car to the United States. The car returned to Switzerland in the early 2000s when Hans Van Deventer bought it. He drove it in a dozen Bugatti rallies in Europe before selling it to its current owner, also a prominent Bugatti enthusiast, in 2015.~ -	Today, this exceptional Bugatti 57 is presented to us in incredible original condition. It is one of the few Bugattis in existence today that is technically still in the same condition as when it was delivered. The car is matching numbers, and examination of the vehicle reveals a car with all of its original mechanical components intact. The front axle is engraved with #360, as are the axle housings (ratio 11x46) and gearbox. The rear left engine mount bears the chassis and engine numbers, 57483-360. The chassis is stamped #136, a number consistent with the production of Type 57 chassis. Well maintained, the car drives wonderfully smoothly and precisely. The only deviations from the original are an electronic ignition and an expansion tank. When it left Graber, #57483 was probably painted dark red, a colour that can be found inside, on the doors, and it was repainted silver grey several decades ago. The interior was renovated some time ago. The car's last public appearance was at the 2018 Techno Classic cca Essen show, where it was displayed on the brand's stand, confirming the car's high historical value, both in terms of its characteristics and its known and ongoing history and incredible state of preservation.
