“One of the rarest and most high-performance models from the brand with the crossed cannons, featuring a body designed by Alexis Kow”
Now unjustly forgotten, Hotchkiss is the only French brand to have won the Monte Carlo Rally six times. Its slogan, ‘The brand of the happy medium’, was well suited to its high-quality products, which were less exclusive than those of its competitors Delahaye, Talbot and Delage.
From its inception until its demise in 1956, Hotchkiss produced only four- and six-cylinder cars. After the Second World War, despite two further victories at Monte Carlo in 1949 and 1950, as well as success in numerous other major rallies and record-breaking feats, Hotchkiss failed to regain its former standing.
At the 1950 Paris Motor Show, Hotchkiss unveiled its 13 hp and 20 hp models, named the 13-50 and 20-50, whose very elegant and understated bodywork was designed by stylist Alexis Kow.
The GS (Grand Sport) version was built on a shorter chassis than the saloon. Hotchkiss produced fewer than 40 examples, despite their outstanding qualities and performance, and it is said that the brand with the crossed cannons took four years to sell them all.
This magnificent and rare 1951 Hotchkiss coach features a beautiful ultramarine blue paintwork, true to the original and in excellent condition, complemented by grey leather upholstery. The car is in superb running order and presentation, and the 6-cylinder engine, coupled with the famous Cotal electromagnetic gearbox, delivers first-class performance. This beautiful French car, an alternative to the Bugatti 57, Delahaye 135, Talbot-Lago T26 and other contemporary Delage D6s, deserves the full attention of a true connoisseur.
