Bentley Azure – 2006
French registration title
After the success of the Rolls-Royce Corniche and its discontinuation in 1995, the Vickers Group (Rolls and Bentley) decided to add a similar model to the Bentley catalogue. It was based on the Continental R, a tried-and-tested model, and the result was a great success. The first generation remained in the catalogue from 1995 to 2003, a period of transition for Bentley between the Vickers group and Volkswagen.
The second generation, of which our example is a part, was presented in 2006 on the basis of the Arnage. Resolutely more modern, it inherited the reliability and quality of workmanship typical of cars from the VW group, coupled with the prestige of the traditional “in-house” 6.75-litre V8, now twin-turbocharged Once again, it proved to be a great success, although only 716 examples were produced before the model was discontinued.
Our example rolled off the production line in 2007 for a very special customer: the Bentley press centre! It will be registered DK06 BEU, before being used over several thousand kilometres by various journalists, while simultaneously making the front page of articles, notably for “l’Automobile Magazine”. It remained at the press centre for at least two years, before being sold to an enthusiast, who used it for journeys between Monaco and Hamburg. It’s also worth noting that the maintenance booklet and instructions are always included.
Today, the car is in perfect condition, with just 38,000 km on the clock. During our test drive, we were blown away by how easy it was to get to grips with, far easier than the car’s size would suggest. Unsurprisingly, the car is more comfortable than ever, and the 6.75-litre V8 is absolutely impressive despite its weight!
As one specialist magazine put it, the Arnage and Azure family is Bentley’s haute couture, where the Continental GT and Flying Spur are its prêt-à-porter! With such an attractive price tag, it’s impossible to resist the top of the Bentley range...
