La Licorne Type BV Runabout – c. 1914
French historic registration title
At the very beginning of the last century, Mr. Corre founded the Compagnie française des Automobiles Corre, and quickly made a name for himself in competition. But a 5-year lawsuit with Renault, which he eventually lost, forced him to sell his company to one of his engineers.
In 1907, the brand name was changed to La Licorne. The company then took the name Compagnie française des Automobiles Corre - La Licorne, then La Licorne, in reference to the mythical animal that appeared on the Lestienne engineer’s family coat of arms.
Up until the First World War, the brand, always highly invested in competition, also acquired an excellent reputation, particularly in terms of reliability. Partly thanks to the De Dion, Ballot and Chapuis-Dornier engines used in its creations.
In fact, it’s a Chapuis-Dornier 8HP 4-cylinder that powers the BV-type Runabout that illustrates these pages. Geoges Goffoz bought it in the early 1970s and rebuilt it from a pile of tired parts (photos attached). Please note that the current registration title shows 1914 as the serial number, whereas the car appears to be identified as #4508.
50 years on, the condition of this Le Licorne, of which an identical photo can be found as a liaison car during the First World War, testifies to the quality of the restoration and the resources invested at the time. After a seemingly straightforward return to service, it will be the delight of its new owner...
