Mercedes-Benz 350 SL – 1980
French registration title
In 1971, the new Mercedes-Benz SL Type R107 had the tough task of succeeding the legendary Pagode W113. There was such a world between the two models (in terms of style, chassis or engines) that it remained in the catalogue until 1989 with only a few changes dictated by adaptation to general economic conditions, oil crises, technical advances and safety and environmental standards, without abandoning its initial concept: luxury and performance.
The initial model was the 350 SL with a 200 hp V8 engine, soon joined by the 450 with a 4.5-litre V8. This authentic GT, also built as an SLC coupé, is today a classic youngtimer of the highest order, appreciated for its build quality and performance.
For an entire generation, it symbolises the image of American success, with all the most famous actors having driven an R107 in films or TV series: from Bobby Ewing in Dallas, to Richard Gere in American Gigolo, Jonathan Hart in L’Amour du Risque, and even Eddy Murphy in the first instalment of The Beverly Hills Cop. A real star on four wheels!
Our SL 350 (badged 450 on the boot!) has only had four owners in 45 years, including 20 years in the hands of its first owner. It comes with recent service bills, including a change of soft top in 2015. The bodywork, repainted in Magma Red (the car was originally Thistle Green), presents relatively well, and we will appreciate the aftermarket accessory wheels.
