Jaguar Mk 2 3.8 BA –1962

French historic registration title

After its numerous successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Jaguar marque was in full effervescence and offered varied models. The idea of grafting the XK engine under the bonnet of a saloon then quickly took shape in William Lyons’ mind. It was in 1959 that the Mk 2 was unveiled at the London Motor Show to replace the Jaguar Mk 1 presented 2 years earlier with the 3.4-litre engine.
It was at the time the fastest production saloon in the world and proved it. At its wheel, Bernard Consten would win the Tour de France Automobile three times from 1960 to 1963 with the model equipped with the 3.8-litre engine. It is certainly today the saloon most appreciated by collectors for its numerous qualities.
The car illustrated on these pages, in dark green with black interior, is a desirable 3.8-litre. Born with a manual gearbox with overdrive, it probably suffered an engine failure, since it is now equipped with a 3.8 S engine, and a Borg Warner manual gearbox (small leak to note, level to be checked regularly).
Owned by a former engine engineer from Scuderia Ferrari for nearly 15 years, this Jaguar has benefited from rare mechanical attention, with more than €30,000 in invoices: cylinder head reconditioned, timing chain changed, brakes redone, power steering overhaul (not original), etc.
One finds Jaguar Mk 2s at all prices, but this 3.8-litre, which perhaps needs to be put back to manual gearbox, is an excellent base, and moreover offered at a reasonable estimate considering the work it has already benefited from. We also like the patina of the whole.
