Citroën SM Injection – 1976

French registration title

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, the SM, for Project S Maserati, was striking for its innovative design by Robert Opron. Its taut lines gave the SM a unique dynamism. Its excellent Cx of 0.46 was the result of extensive work in the wind tunnel, which dictated its overall appearance.
Taking advantage of Citroën’s takeover of Maserati in 1968, the SM’s bonnet was fitted with an all-new twin-shaft V6 engine marked with the trident, with a displacement of 2,670 cc, first with a carburettor, then with fuel injection.
With the same hydropneumatic suspension as the DS, it retained the comfort that was so dear to Citroën, and the new Diravi steering with servo-assisted return enabled it to maintain high speeds with the greatest of ease. Only 12,920 examples were sold over the five years of production. Today, SMs are increasingly sought-after and are enjoying a revival of interest. A perfect blend of modernity, comfort and performance, the SM is a different kind of GT car, one with status and style.
The superb example that illustrates these pages is a fuel-injected version in the highly desirable Simian Gold colour, combined with a tobacco leather interior to great effect. Sold new by Garage Domingue in Pau, this SM was later owned by a Citroën garage in the Landes region (Garage Marc Retourné, in Artassenx) from 1989 to 2023.
Still accompanied by its original Certificate of Compliance, warranty card, and original stamped service booklet, this SM has also benefited from a recent engine overhaul, with nearly €7,000 worth of parts purchased from the renowned Ets Blondeau. It will be up to the future owner to complete the break-in of this incredible SM...
