Salon des Artistes français, Paris, Galerie des Machines, 1898, n°936 Note Circe appears mainly in Canto X of the Odyssey. She lives on the island of Eea, in a palace in the middle of a clearing, surrounded by wolves and lions, formerly men she had bewitched. It was here, according to Argonautic accounts, that she took in and purified Jason and Medea (her niece, daughter of Aeetes) after the murder of Absyrtos. When Ulysses and his companions land on the island, twenty-two of them, led by Eurylochus, are lured to the palace by a harmonious voice. The magician welcomes them and offers them a cyceon, a beverage made from barley gruel, green honey, cheese and Pramnos wine, to which she adds a poison. As soon as they have drunk, she recites an incantation that transforms them into pigs. Eurylochus, who has stayed outside, runs to warn Ulysses, who sets off in search of Circe the sorceress. The god Hermes appears to him as a handsome young man holding a golden reed. The god Hermes with the golden wand hands him the herb "moly" and gives him iiiiiiinstructions on how to triumph over Circe. When he arrives at the magician's, she offers him the cyceon, but fails to transform him. Ulysses draws his sword. Frightened, Circe offers to share her bed. Again, following Hermes' recommendations, Ulysses asks the sorceress to swear by "the great oath of the gods" that she will not harm him again. When this is done, Ulysses and Circe unite, and she returns the companions to their human form. A year passes. Finally, she helps the hero and his crew prepare for their departure, advising them to consult the soothsayer Tiresias in the Underworld.

Salon des Artistes français, Paris, Galerie des Machines, 1898, n°936 Note Circé apparaît principalement au chant X de l’Odyssée. Elle habite dans l’île d’Ééa, dans un palais situé au milieu d’une clairière, entouré de loups et de lions, autrefois des hommes qu'elle a ensorcelés. C’est là qu’elle a, si l'on en croit les récits argonautiques, recueilli et purifié Jason et Médée (sa nièce, fille d’Éétès) après le meurtre d’Absyrtos. Quand Ulysse et ses compagnons abordent l’île, vingt-deux d’entre eux, menés par Euryloque, se laissent attirer jusqu’au palais par une voix harmonieuse. La magicienne les accueille et leur offre un cycéon, breuvage composé de gruau d’orge, de miel vert, de fromage et de vin de Pramnos auquel elle ajoute un poison. Dès qu’ils ont bu, elle récite une incantation qui les transforme en porcs. Euryloque, resté dehors, court avertir Ulysse, qui part à la recherche de Circé la magicienne. Le dieu Hermès lui apparaît alors sous la forme d’un beau jeune homme tenant un roseau d’or. Le dieu Hermès à la baguette d’or lui remet l’herbe « moly » et lui donne des iiiiiiinstructions pour triompher de Circé. Quand il arrive chez la magicienne, celle-ci lui offre le cycéon, mais elle échoue à le transformer. Ulysse tire son épée. Apeurée, Circé lui offre de partager son lit. Là encore, Ulysse, suivant les recommandations d’Hermès, demande à la magicienne de jurer par « le grand serment des dieux » qu’elle ne cherchera plus à lui faire de mal. Cela fait, Ulysse et Circé s’unissent, puis elle rend aux compagnons leur apparence humaine. Un an s'écoule. Elle aide enfin le héros et son équipage à préparer leur départ, en leur conseillant d'aller consulter le devin Tirésias aux Enfers.
