In their book on Barye, Poletti and Richarme state that F. Barbedienne's posthumous print is the actual edition, and that this model is rarely found in period castings. Thus, according to them, over a fifteen-year period during the sculptor's lifetime, "fewer than thirty or so proofs were probably cast."
