Note
This work can be compared with some of the horse studies in the album of drawings by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux donated to the Musée du Louvre by Prince George Stirbey in 1881 (see e.g. RF 1290, Recto), as well as other sheets in the Musée d'Orsay (cabinet des arts graphiques du musée du Louvre) such as RF 4788, Recto or RF 4825, Recto. The catalog for the exhibition Dessins de maîtres anciens (Galerie de Bayser, 1977) indicates that the sheet bears the stamp of the studio sale [Lugt L.500] in the lower left-hand corner. This stamp is no longer visible.
