PROVENANCE Galerie L'Art Vivant, Casablanca, circa 1944 Collection privée, Algérie, milieu des années 1940 Collection privée, France (par transmission familiale du précédent) Enfants endormis est une soie typique du travail de Mai Trung Thứ au début des années 1940, lors des expositions données en Algérie et également à Casablanca. Acquise à la Galerie L'Art Vivant et transmise familialement par la suite, cette soie illustre deux écoliers, représentés dans une composition pyramidale. Ici, les jeunes garçons se sont endormis alors qu’ils étudiaient. Aux pieds de celui vêtu de blanc se trouve un cahier sur lequel est noté son nom : Chen Wen Qin. La maîtrise et le travail de la ligne permettent de rendre les drapés des vêtements avec une grande précision. Mai Trung Thứ immortalise ici ses souvenirs scolaires avec tendresse et humour. Born in 1906 near Haiphong, Mai Trung Thứ attended the French high-school in Hanoi. Like Lê Phổ, Vũ Cao Đàm and Le Van De, he was in the first year of students at the École des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine, founded and directed by the painter Victor Tardieu. Invited to take part in the 1931 Paris Colonial Exhibition, Mai Trung Thứ discovered and fell in love with France, where he settled in the late 30’s and stayed until he died. Although strongly influenced by the teachings of Tardieu and Joseph Inguimberty, he is the one of his comrades who retained the deepest-rooted sense of Vietnamese identity. He soon abandoned oils for gouache and ink on silk: typical Asian techniques that enabled him to develop a style richly reminiscent of traditional Chinese and Vietnamese art. Although an independent artist, he remained politically committed and concerned about the future of his country. “Những đứa trẻ say ngủ" là một bức tranh lụa tiêu biểu cho các tác phẩm của Mai Trung Thứ vào đầu những năm 1940 khi ông tham gia các triển lãm ở Algérie và Casablanca. Được mua tại Phòng trưng bày L'Art Vivant và sau đó được truyền lại qua các thế hệ trong gia đình, bức tranh lụa này vẽ về hai cậu học sinh trong một bố cục hình kim tự tháp. Ở đây, các cậu bé đã ngủ quên khi đang học. Dưới chân của cậu bé mặc đồ trắng là một cuốn vở, trên đó có ghi tên: Chen Wen Qin.
