Saint Jean de Capistran (1386--456) was an Italian Franciscan monk, tireless preacher and renowned jurist. A member of the Order of Friars Minor, he traveled throughout Europe preaching the Catholic faith. In 1456, despite his advanced age, he spiritually led the Christian troops in the defense of Belgrade against the Ottomans, for which he was portrayed with military attributes. He was canonized in 1690 and celebrated on October 23.
