Son of a painter in the king's furniture storage room, Jean-Baptiste Huet was born in the Louvre in 1745. Born into a dynasty of artists, he naturally trained and developed his style in a context as familiar as it was favorable. First a pupil of his father, he then entered the workshops of animal painter Charles Dagomer (c. 1700-1766) and Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781), one of the most eminent pupils of François Boucher (1703-1770). Nourished by these early influences, Huet also drew inspiration from Italian and Flemish masters from the Renaissance to the Baroque. He soon developed a particular affinity for pastoral and animal subjects, genres in which he excelled and was regularly called upon to transpose them to the decorative arts. Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf (1738-1815) commissioned him to create motifs for Jouy's printed canvases, which are still widely used today. He was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1769, and was a regular exhibitor at the Salon from 1769 to 1802. Following in Boucher's footsteps, Huet was also a champion of the playful, somewhat carefree 18th century. This pretty gallant scene bears witness to this: avoiding the pitfall of mawkishness, the artist mixes the lightness of the moment with a more licentious aspect. Against the backdrop of an ideally bucolic landscape, a couple of shepherds rest among their reclining flock. If the gesture at first sight is that of exchanging flower wreaths, it must not omit either the shepherd's gesture of revealing his companion's breast, or the visibly displeased attitude of the dog who is present. Despite the dog's displeasure, the outcome of the moment is sealed. Playing with the codes of banter, Huet offers us this idealized vision of a rustic yet fulfilling life in the heart of harmonious nature.
