Abraham's sacrifice, black chalk heightened with white

(Sold framed)

Preparatory drawing for the painting of Abraham's Sacrifice, cited in Thierry Lefrançois' catalog (Charles Coypel 1694-1752, Paris, Arthéna, 1994, P. 237, p. 337-338) with an unknown location. The painting reappeared on the occasion of the exhibition Les peintres du roi 1648-1793 (Paris, 2000, p. 265, no. R. 284) and was reproduced in the catalog. It was subsequently sold with its counterpart Abraham Preparing the Sacrifice of Isaac in a first anonymous sale in 2003 (vente anonyme, Corbeil-Essonnes, Bonduelle and Lancry, May 17, 2003, no. 105), then in the 2015 sale Master Paintings: Part I (New-York, Sotheby's, January 29, 2015, no. 90).
In particular, the drawing shows variations from the painting for the angel's right leg and the hands of Abraham, Isaac and the angel, as well as repentirs where the wash does not follow a first black stone line that was scratched out.
