Fisherman of Iceland. Novel. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1886. In-8, dark-brown morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt author and title, mosaic seabird motif on upper board, double gilt fillet at edges, guilloche-edged headpieces, fore-edges trimmed in morocco with 4 gilt fillets, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, case [Marius Michel] (nerves a little faded, case split and incomplete at bottom).
First edition and first illustrated edition.
It contains 9 etchings engraved by Gaston Manchon: a portrait-frontispiece, as well as, after compositions by Paul-
Léon Jazet, 6 plates and 2 vignettes in the text.
One of 235 copies reprinted in large in-8 format on laid paper (no. 228). It contains the illustrations in 3 states, including 2 before the letter.
It is enhanced by an original watercolor signed by P.
Jazet and dated 1887.
Also enriched with an autograph letter-card signed by Pierre Loti, probably to an actress (2 p. in-12 oblong): "Madame, it is with great pleasure that I authorize you to reprise this play of 'Pêcheur d'Islande', of which you were the acclaimed and marvelous interpreter in Paris. I am delighted to think that it will once again be incomparably performed by you...".
