BRAQUE. HESIODE. THEOGONY.
Etchings by Georges Braque. [Paris], Maeght, 1955. In-folio, fawn morocco, smooth muted spine, entirely mosaic composition covering the spine and boards, with two large red bird profiles inspired by Braque, silhouettes of figures and multiple curved fillets in shades of golden yellow and ochre, red suede lining and endpapers, the flaps decorated with a mosaic composition offering faces in orange hue and skeletal elements in gray, gilt head, untrimmed, covers preserved, moiré gray cloth jacket titled "HÉSIDE. THÉOGONIE". covers, gray moiré cloth folder titled on front cover and spine, matching slipcase [Gomez].
Greek edition of the text of Hesiod's Theogony, typographed in 16-point Europe capitals, and illustrated with 20 original compositions by Georges Braque, including the cover, a frontispiece, a chapter heading, a cul-de-lampe, and 16 plates. A supplementary engraved plate at the end of the volume shows a reduction of all the illustrations, in the order in which they appear in the book.
The engravings were executed by the painter in 1932 at the request of Ambroise Vollard| the cover, frontispiece, chapter head and cul-de-lampe were engraved by Braque in 1953. The cover was varnished by the artist.
Limited edition of 150 copies on Auvergne paper, all signed by the painter, this one no. 116.
