CABANIS Pierre Jean Georges (1757-1808) DOCTOR, PHYSIOLOGIST AND PHILOSOPHER.
5 autograph MANUSCRITS, [translations by Meissner, ca. 1796]| ca. 120 pages in-4, 3 in titled folders.
Important set of working manuscripts by Cabanis, translator from German.
Reunion of 5 translations of texts by August Gottlieb MEISSNER (1753-1807), published with four others in Mélanges de littérature allemande (Paris, Smits, an V), where Cabanis praises
Meissner: "Without equaling Goethe, Meissner has made no small contribution to perfecting the language of prose. Above all, he seems to have felt the need to shorten and simplify the sentence. His is almost always short and rapid: he tightens his frames, he brings together striking features, in the manner of several French writers| and his style has a flow and vivacity that are uniquely his."
These five manuscripts are heavily crossed out and corrected: - Le
Chien de Mélaï (19 p.)| - Gustave Lindau "fragment extrait du
Voyage de Branko" (61 p., including 6 in another hand with corrections)| - Diego de Colmenarès "anecdote traduite de l'allemand de
Meissner" (25 p.)| - L'heroïque vertu des peuples de l'Orenoque (11 p.)| - Roxane "épisode de l'histoire de Massoud" (5 p.).
2 partly autograph versions of a translation of GRAY's elegy, Le Cimetière de campagne (4 and 6 p.)| plus a copy of "Idille de Bion sur la mort d'Adonis, traduite du grec" (7 p.).
