Autograph manuscript of the first 9 quatrains of "L'amour de la patrie,"...thirtieth in the collection Bonheur (1891)| written on hospital administrative paper, it is numbered XVII here, the place it occupied in the original version of the collection.
"Love of country is the first love
And the last love after the love of God.
It is a fire that is kindled as the day is dawning
Where our gaze shines like a celestial fire"...
A set of corrected proofs of the poem submitted "to the Écho de Paris competition" is enclosed. It comprises 16 quatrains, with variations from the final version. Verlaine made a few corrections, and added an epigraph from Birds in the night in the Romances sans paroles. The proof set was sent to Verlaine by the publisher, with this note: "Cher Maître, Reçu votre rectification. Your note will pass. Please return the proofs as soon as possible. Apologies telegram and cordial regards".
