Our manuscript bears the title Fragen (Questions)| in the
Epigramme, the title becomes Überlebung (Survival).
"Langsam reift die Entscheidung der Nachwelt über ein Kunstwerk.
Aber was bringet Sie öfter zur Reife? Ist es der Ausspruch
Derer, die Schreiben? oder ist es der Redenden Urtheil?
Überlebt hab' ich der Unsterblichkeiten nicht wenig,
Welche die Presse verhiess, u. der Ungedruckte belachte."
Free translation: Posterity's decision about a work of art matures slowly. But what makes it mature? Is it the proverb? The writers? Or the judgment of the talkers? I've survived many immortalities, promised by the press and mocked by the unpublished.
