At the bottom of a printed circular letter appealing to literati, scholars and amateurs to subscribe to his next work, which he is going to publish by subscription (this is the 1st volume of his Deutsche
Gelehrtenrepublik), Klopstock adds an 11-line autograph postscript, instructing Bürger to spread the word.
"Um Ihnen meine Dankbarkeit für Ihr freundschaftliches Zutraun zu bezeigen habe ich angefangen etliche Anmerkungen (Hr. Cr.
brings Sie Ihnen) über Ihren Homer aufzuschreiben. - Ich empfehle
Ihnen diese Subscript., als eine gemeinschaftliche Sache der
Gelehrten. Ich habe Göttingen in die Beylage gesetzt, weil das
Ihr nächster Ort ist. - Verlangen Sie noch andre Blätter von mir| so haben Sie die Güte, mir die Örter, wo sie hinsollen, anzuzeigen.
Denn die p.c. steigen nachdem ein Ort entfernter ist."
Free translation: In order to show my gratitude for your friendly confidence, I have begun to write a number of notes on your Homer (Mr. Cr[amer] is bringing them to you). - I recommend this subscription to you, as a common cause of scholars. I have included Göttingen in the enclosure because it is your next residence. - Ask me for other bulletins| and you will be kind enough to tell me where you should go. Because the cost increases with distance.
