L.A.S. "le Vte Victor Hugo", Paris March 15, 1845, to Count
BRESSON, French ambassador in Madrid| 1 page in-4, autograph envelope with countersignature.
He thanks the ambassador: "everything you write me is charming| everything you have done is noble and gracious. I am overwhelmed. I feel all that is honorable in this distinction granted in this spontaneous and magnificent way"... [This is the Cross of the Royal Order of Carlos III.]
He offers her a copy of his speech [for the reception of
Sainte-Beuve's reception at the Académie française on February 27, 18845] "which you kindly read with such affectionate cordiality and which inspired the idea that makes me proud today", along with three other copies intended for Martinez de la Rosa and "their majesties Queen Isabelle and Queen Christine". And he instructs the ambassador to tell Martinez de la Rosa "how much his illustrious name adds for me to the glorious distinction you announce to me on his behalf"...
