FRANCE Anatole (1844-1924).
MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Anatole France",
L'Île des Pingouins, Conte de Noël, [1905]| 19 pages in-fol.
(approx. 36 x 23 cm| some edges chipped and a few slight defects).
Complete manuscript of the tale, later developed into a novel.
This "Christmas tale" appeared in the European edition of the New York Herald on December 17, 1905| it is the primitive nucleus of what would become an eight-book novel, Penguin Island, published in October 1908.
This "Christmas tale", as the manuscript's subtitle indicates, corresponds to the first book of the novel, with significant variants.
It is divided into eight chapters: I on the life and merits of Saint Maël| II How Queen Glamorgane conceived a criminal love for Saint
Maël, and what followed. How Saint Maël became abbot of the monastery of St Corentin, and how he was called to the apostolate| III which deals with Saint Maël's apostolic labors| IV How Saint Maël, tempted by the devil, rigged his stone angel|
V How Saint Maël was driven by a terrible storm across the ocean of ice| VI How Saint Maël landed on the island that has since been named Alca, and how he baptized the penguins|
VII Of an assembly held in paradise| VIII How the holy man Maël changed the penguins into men and towed the island, since named Alca, to the coast of Brittany.
The manuscript, in violet or black ink, contains numerous erasures and corrections| it was used for printing (some leaves have been cut out and reassembled).
The corrected proofs, on 8 large narrow leaves, are enclosed| plus a L.A.S. from NADAR about a balloon ascent (Sept. 17, 1863).
OEuvres (Pléiade), t. IV, p. 1268-1276.
