BALZAC Honoré de (1799-1850).
L.A.S. "de Bc", [2 ? July 1833], to bookseller Charles GOSSELIN| 1 page in-8, address (pale ink, spotting).
Concerning Le Médecin de campagne.
"The last press proof [of the second dixain of Contes drolatiques] will be presented to you on Friday, my dear Gosselin| but it is of the utmost urgency that I see you tomorrow at five o'clock at my house, as it is a question of giving you the Médecin de campagne, for which I hope to obtain from the court the appointment of a bookseller. There is a complete rupture between me and your singular uncle [Louis MAME], and no rapprochement is possible. [...] It is Éverat who has been unable to compose, his character being committed.
[Louis MAME took Balzac to court for non-delivery of the promised manuscript. Indignant at the procedure, Balzac went to the Barbier printing works and ransacked the composition of Le Médecin de campagne| he was ordered to compensate Mame. Le Médecin de campagne was published by Mame and Delaunay-Vallée on September 3, 1833].
