LISZT Franz (1811-1886).
L.A.S. "F. Liszt", Weymar October 14, 1848, to a publisher friend| 4 pages in-8.
About the catalog of his works.
He has been ill, and since he is better, he has "taken the opportunity to correct the proofs of the Schlummerlied and Liebeslied [after Schumann] which you must have received yesterday". He thanks you for sending him cigars, portraits and the Struwwelpeter, which "entertained him immensely"... For his catalog, of which he has asked "to have a hundred copies printed", he does not want Mendelssohn's to be taken as a model.
Mendelssohn's as a model: "The engraving of the notes becomes entirely superfluous for the latter, which can perfectly well do without a thematic table and confine itself to a few typographic ornaments for the main titles, which will make its printing, or lithography, much less expensive, while completely satisfying the conditions of the use for which I intend it. Please have it printed or lithographed simply as I have sent it to you, recommending only that the typographer choose fairly large type with some ornamentation around the edges for titles such as Concertos, Fantaisies, Lieder, etc.".
Then he mentions that Robert Franz is to give a concert in Halle: "I shall play two pieces there". He hopes his friend will come, and invites him to dinner, "and if you're out shooting partridges before the concert, I'll go hunting with you to get my fingers back in shape"...
