GOUNOD Charles (1818-1893).
L.A.S. "Ch. Gounod", Courtavenel September 1, 1850, to Ivan TOURGUENIEV| 4 pages in-8, dry stamp of the Collection
Viardot (small stains).
Beautiful letter to Tourguéniev about Sapho and Pauline Viardot.
"Dear good Tourguéneff, I love you with all my heart: that is my first word and I will repeat it again at the end of my letter". He assures her of "the good, sure, solid, sincere and tender affection we have here for you. [...] It seems to me that every hour of your life must be as if protected by the hearts in which you have remained| [...] you must feel truly guarded and watched over here - Dear Madame VIARDOT has been back in our midst for two days: yesterday we talked a lot about you both: you know how tenderly devoted she is to you: she has kindly updated me on the details of your life by reading some of your letters"... He apologizes for not having written her more, but he has been lately "so sickly busy and preoccupied with the second act of Sapho", that he was in the most disobliging mood, "and that I had I think nothing better to do than to spare my friends such an acrimonious contact". He would have done nothing but harp on his anxiety, doubts, hesitations, reversals and compositional blockages: "understand how nothing could pacify me about the true value of my work as long as I was grappling with an indestructible doubt about dramatic value.
Now my peace is back here: she has spoken to me: and when I had not seen on and in her face a contentment I so badly needed, her word was enough for the tranquility I wished for - Yes, dear| our Sapho is content with mine [...] it is for me the sweetest and most serious reward for my work. [...] I will only tell you how happy I am that you have accepted, welcomed and loved my music in the bosom of a nature as beautiful as the one that receives it"... He ends his letter with lengthy protestations of friendship...
