BRUCKNER Anton (1824-1896).
L.A.S. "Bruckner", Vienna, June 21, 1890| 2 pages in-8| in German.
Curious letter concerning the organist of the
St. Florian monastery.
Bruckner received a letter from Gruber [his pupil, the organist Joseph
GRUBER (1855-1933)] informing him that the Bayer choirmaster [Franz Xaver BAYER (1862-1921), Bruckner's great friend] from
Steyr had affairs of the heart. A priest from St. Florian's Abbey also wrote to him, alluding to the matter. Bruckner asks for clarification, unable even to imagine what this means. He feels very embarrassed towards Saint-Florian, where he begs his correspondent to stop talking about him. Has the young singer already married the master baker? He adds that he is to travel to Ischl on July 31 to play the organ at the wedding [of Archduchess Marie-Valérie and Archduke Franz Salvator]| this is what is desired in high places. [Bruckner called himself "the Emperor's organist", and gave organ concerts at the Emperor's summer residence in Bad Ischl on the occasion of the Emperor's birthday or other festivities, such as this July 31]. "H[err] Stiftsorganist Gruber schrieb mir unlängst folgendes: 'H.
