MONET Claude (1840-1926).
L.A.S. "Claude Monet", Monday [1878?], to Ernest HOSCHEDÉ| 3 pages in-8 (split fold repaired).
On his difficult beginnings.
[Ernest HOSCHEDÉ (1837-1891) was one of Monet's first patrons and collectors| after his bankruptcy, his wife Alice became Monet's companion, who married her].
He sent her "one hundred francs. It's not much, but I'm very happy to be able to send it, for I despaired.
I don't know when I'll be able to come back. I still have to find enough to pay 200 to Bellio [Dr Georges de Bellio (1828-1894), collector], pay for my hotel, bring back enough to give a little money to Vétheuil [his wife Camille] and I also have to buy canvases and colors. I'm afraid I'll find nature quite changed and yet I have several canvases to finish that I would sell much more easily if they were more advanced. I have one sold that I'll get the price for when I bring it back finished.
I still have some hope, but very little.
Attached is a L.A.S. from Ernest HOSCHEDÉ, Paris February 14, 1884, to a friend (Monet?) with whom he needs to chat: "It's important!" (1 p. in-8).
