L.A.S. "G.C", [Ornans January 14, 1852, to his friend Francis WEY]| 4 pages in-4.
Important artistic and political letter.
"The generation to which you belong has neither faith nor beliefs, whereas I have worked all my life to have a raison d'être, unique as far as possible, and this is what all the acs of my life tend to. You go with the flow| I stay with my principle, and that's the difference between us. Any form of government, any event, doesn't intrigue me at all. The ugliest bourgeois in France wouldn't have told me that I had to change the nature of my inspirations. Cher ami j'ai cela sur le coeur| vous êtes donc de ceux qui croient que je fais de la politique en peinture - je fais des casseurs de pierre, Murillo fait un casseur de poux, je suis un socialiste, et Murillo un honnête homme| c'est incroyable"...
Courbet criticizes Wey for not having sent him his reply to
Garcin published in Le Messager...
Then on the aftermath of the December 2 coup d'état: "This revolution made me lose three weeks. I threw up my hatful of bile. I'm even only in terms of temperament, because, with all my friends inside, I'm very actively monitored in my words and actions. Thanks to my composure I am not yet caught, I have the honor of having at my heels Mr. Brigadier d'Ornans [...] who a year ago already felt the need to denounce me to the Prefecture of Police. This man continues his work without rhyme or reason"... He doesn't know if it's wise to return to Paris right away: "I don't want to go to Guyana right now, but later I don't know. The officer in my Caserne de pompiers [Victor Frond] is on the run, or dead, I'm told - the painting is very forward. However, I would have liked to finish the portrait of Md Quock [Cuoq (Metropolitan Museum)] for the exhibition.
If the exhibition were delayed by a month, that would suit me perfectly, although the two paintings I have in Ornans are finished"... He congratulates
Wey on his success at the Théâtre Français (his comedy Stella), which he would have applauded "as I would never applaud Mr. Napoleon, whatever he does".
Napoléon whatever he does"... He adds in a postscript: "People open my letters, be careful, they don't always give them to me".
Correspondance (Flammarion, 1996), letter 52-1.
