"I stayed 2 months in Laos, in Luang Prabang, from where I radiated either on horseback, by pirogue, or on elephant back [...] to the Pakou Caves, to Ta-Dena,... Muong-Phien, Col Paillotte." "...this trek has delighted me and been fruitful in new impressions and work"".
With these words, Evariste Jonchère, Sculptor-Painter, First Grand Prix de Rome, Prix d'Indochine, wrote to the Governor General of Indochina on June 10 and July 1, 1934. These extracts recount the circumstances that enabled him to create, among other works, a painting of a Petite Laotienne on market day, as well as the original sculpture Jeune Laotienne. A bronze print of this sculpture was cast in Biên Hòa, probably in 1935, and was exhibited on various occasions throughout the 20th century in France, such as in 1935 and 1936, at the Salons de la France d'Outre-Mer, and in 1956, at the Salon des artistes français. But also, on the occasion of retrospective exhibitions dedicated to the artist Évariste Jonchère (1958, Grand Palais| Paris - 1970| Annecy - 1987| Poitiers - 1989| Noyon) or during the "Coloniales" exhibition organized in 1989 in Boulogne-Billancourt (ill.6).
Here, Évariste Jonchère models the gentle face of a young girl, adorned with a necklace and a pair of earrings. Her long hair is tied back in a bun, while her expression is frank and direct.
The print presented today is numbered 3/8 and was lost-wax cast by the Godard foundry. It is a posthumous casting. The Godard foundry began using the lost-wax casting technique when it took over the Bisceglia foundry in 1962.
